Alternatively you could use regular JPA annotations and perhaps use JPA's natural language type mappings, or use the hibernate 3.x type mapping.
The new president of the National Association of Black Journalists has a different perspective on newsroom diversity.
“You got to be super careful with that kind of stuff because people are so quick to jump on the diversity bandwagon and the diversity train — whatever the analogy is,” said Wyking Garrett, who has worked as a journalist for more than 30 years and is president and CEO of the newspaper trade group.
Garrett spoke with the Washington Blade about diversity in newsrooms, his plans to lead the industry and the dangers he sees in ethnic newsrooms. Garrett, who said he is African American, discussed everything from race to gender and how to hold journalists accountable.
Washington Blade: Could you talk a little bit about the organization and what you want to do as its new leader?
Wyking Garrett: I’m really proud to be associated with the National Association of Black Journalists. It’s a great organization. I started working in newspapers in 1975. And it’s a shame, really, that it’s taken as long as it has for us to get to the point we’re at now, where we have a president of the organization that is African American. That’s a huge accomplishment for the organization and we’ve been working for a long time to see this day.
And when I say we, I include the previous president, Alex Nash, as well as the CEO of the organization, Samuel Lewis. They were all African American.
Blade: What’s your plan for the organization?
Garrett: Our plan is to make sure that our members are properly represented. That we have good journalists in the organization. We have to keep the profession strong and vibrant. We have to find the best young journalists and put them to work. We have to develop and nurture and encourage our own journalists. And we’ve got to ensure that journalists are adequately paid for their work.
Blade: What do you see as the top challenges facing journalists and what can you do to address them?
Garrett: The most critical thing we can do, we’ve got to create more and better jobs in the newsrooms of America. That means that people can afford to go into journalism and live their lives. It also
